I’ve been asked the question of whether leaders are born or made many times and my answer is always the same: that both nature and nurture play significant roles in shaping effective leaders.

On the nature side, there are many people in the world who certainly possess innate qualities that contribute to their leadership potential; such as charisma, integrity, optimism and accountability. These may be demonstrated from an early age (ever heard a teacher say that a child ‘leads play’ with their friends,  or that a child is a ‘natural born leader’?!)

Some may act on that potential, others not.

While having an inherent predisposition to leadership can be helpful, it’s not a prerequisite for success! A person with natural leadership qualities still needs the right circumstances and experiences to fully develop and utilise their abilities.

So, on the nurture side, those who do act on their potential, ultimately develop their leadership impact through learning skills and knowledge, cultivating an effective mindset and gaining experience over time.

Most successful leaders continually develop themselves, push themselves out of their comfort zone and lead from the front in enhancing their skills through practice, reflection, working with other leaders, learning from structured training and mentorship.

I’m very proud to say I have spent more than 20 years developing hundreds if not thousands of leaders within many organisations and I have never come across a leader who hasn’t got scope to nurture their talents and skills to develop their leadership impact further. I, too, invest heavily every single year in my ongoing leadership development to grow, and be stretched out of my comfort zone.

So how can you work on being a more impactful leader? Where can you practise skills more effectively? What sits outside your current comfort zone? How can your own personal growth help others?

What key attributes can you develop further?

  • Vision: Creating and effectively communicating a clear vision of the future to inspire others and create a sense of purpose and direction.
  • Integrity: Operating with honesty, ethics, and integrity. Earning the trust and respect of team members.
  • Communication: Expressing ideas, actively listening, and providing constructive feedback to engage people.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Understanding and empathising with personal and team member’s emotions and needs, therefore building strong relationships and creating a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Decisiveness: Making timely and effective decisions and taking responsibility for the outcomes.
  • Adaptability: Showing flexibility and adaptability in the face of change and uncertainty. Being open to new ideas and embracing innovation.
  • Empowerment: Delegating authority and responsibility and providing guidance, support, and resources, allowing individuals to grow.
  • Resilience: Maintaining a positive attitude, persevere through difficulties, and inspiring others to overcome obstacles with well considered strategies.
  • Continuous Learning: Never stopping learning. Seeking opportunities to grow knowledge, skills, and expertise. Encouraging a culture of learning.
  • Collaboration and Team Building: Building strong teams by fostering a sense of camaraderie, promoting cooperation, and leveraging the diverse strengths and talents of team members.

In conclusion, as a professional leadership coach I firmly believe that:

“Great leaders are developed through a journey of self-discovery, continuous learning and dedication to empower and inspire greatness in others”.

Yes, people can possess qualities that support great leadership but those qualities need to be nurtured, and developed alongside learning skills and knowledge and developing strategies to be effective.
